Once again I’m finding myself in Germany in the beautiful
month of June where everything is lush and green and fragrant with the scent of
all the flowers in bloom, from peonies to roses.
We left home on the first of June and attended the ‘Familientag’
– family reunion – of Johann’s family that first weekend. Ever since its
beginnings forty years ago this event has taken place at Schloss Höhnscheid, a
small castle used for family reunions of the Baltic German
families and conferences, not far from where I grew up in northern Hesse. I have a special
connection to this place: forty years ago I did a work experience on the dairy
farm across the road in preparation for my studies at an agricultural college.
A large group of people gather for the family reunion every
second year, and the castle with its wonderful facilities in these idyllic surroundings is the perfect place.
For the last two weeks I've been in Korbach, like Höhnscheid in the county of Waldeck, where I attended secondary school. My mother lives here, and I have spent quite a bit of time here in the last couple of years.
Korbach with its historic town centre is well worth a visit, too, and I will introduce it with a few pictures in my next blog entry.
